Petition to Doug Ford - Ontario Indigenous Communities Need Quality Child Care
“Indigenous children under the age of 14 make up less than eight per cent of all children in Canada, yet they represent more than half of the children living in foster care in private homes in the country” (Department of Finance, 2018).
Research shows the many benefits of ealry childhood education and care.
Children who attend child care show: ✔better emotional, mental and physical health ✔higher communication, problem solving skills, and creativity ✔higher academic achievement ✔less likely to be involved with crime later on in lfe
Early childhood experienes provides a foundation for all later development, and affects a person into adulthood. The government needs to look into providing better quality and appropriate childcare and education for the Indigenous communities as a means of prevention and early intervention in response to this care crisis amongst Indigenous children.
