Abolition of Ontario's Front License Plate

I'm moving from Newfoundland to Ontario and dreading putting a front plate on my car.

I live in ontario and I think we shouldn't have to have a front license plate I drive a truck and would be nice not to have to have one on the front

Totally ridiculous... I just got fined $110.00 for not having a front marker. I had the 2nd plate in the trunk. Very pissed off and will have my day in Court.

I think the money saved will be good for the province.

I am sick and tired of the issues caused by front license plates and want to see them gone. Most other provinces do not require this, so why are we Ontarians subjected to them? Remove this requirement and save some of our hard-earned tax dollars. Thank you.

Unnecessary to have both plates. There are tons of places all over that only need one plate, the plate that has your sticker on it. Police officers don't pull you over from the front. If your doin something wrong then obviously there goin to have to be behind you.

There really is no reason for front license plates. Like many others have said they are an obstruction to air intakes and ruin the natural aerodynamic flow of vehicles. Not to mention they're an eyesore and cost the province extra money.

Undoubtedly, a front license plate has a negative impact on the aerodynamics of a vehicle...which can potentially affect the fuel-efficiency of the vehicle. Aren't we supposed to be environmentally-friendly? Plus, there are definitive cost-savings to repealing this law.

As a sports car owner the front license plate blocks air flow into my vehicle, has defaced the look of it and now have holes into the plastic of the car. I wold love if this law was revoked.

I am in agreement with many others on this. It is based on random choice or personal whim of select government officials and has no select purpose that condones the continuance requiring the front plate. It is a waste of time, energy, resources and taxpayers dollars, rather than any logical reason or systematically implied purpose.

This is an outdated practice as many provinces that use photo radar etc (Alberta) do not require a front plate. There is also no reason I should have to drill holes in my personal property (bumper) when coming from another province with a car not designed for another plate on the front. The gov't is forcing this action and does not pay for the damages. Not to mention the waste of money when creating a second plate.

My car got damaged by someone's front licence plate a week after I bought the car. It cost $500 to fix, luckily it was taken care of by the person otherwise I would have been screwed. It was the mounting screws that did the most damage.

I truly hope the government actually listens to the people regarding the redundant & completely uneccessary front plate. I don't know of a single person who sees the need for one. Many, many places around the world don't use 2 license plates, so why does Ontario? We get one yearly sticker, but _two_ plates?? Makes absolutely no sense to me. The $$$ saved could be used towards education programs, (music and art funding is practically non-existent, and in-school sports-funding budgets shrink every year), poverty-related issues, medical / healthcare ... I could go on and on. Please, Ontario! With so many pros & so few cons, (if any), this is a total no-brainer!!

It's not the biggest deal, but I really don't like the look of the front license plate/bracket. As the paragraph states, this could save our province hundreds of thousands. If Saskatchewan can save $370,000, then Ontario can save more (our population being more than 10 times theirs).

I agree! It is so unecessary to have the front plate. It's not lit at night anyways, so most of the time the rear one is used for legal reasons anyway. Even the validation sticker goes on the back! Take em off.

I recently purchased a Mazda Miata convertible. It was formerly registered in Quebec. The design and style of the car does not easily allow for installation of the bracket and plate without damaging the car physically and detract from its aerodynamic efficiency. It is time to do away with this archaic requirement.

Front plates are clearly bad for the environment and are completely unnecessary. All provinces should literally scrap this requirement. License plate production causes waste and pollution. Vehicles affixed with front license plates are less aerodynamic, less efficient and collectively pollute more. Nowadays it’s about being be greener, not wasteful. Half licence plate production, keep vehicles as efficient as possible and cut tons of carbon emissions from the air we breathe.

I totally agree. As a former resident of the province of Quebec now living in Ontario I agree that the front plate is useless.

In order to make this work, everyone just needs to remove them. If enough people do, it becomes the norm!

Clearly front plates are not needed in many states and provinces, so it is difficult to see why the requirement continues in Ontario when there are genuine cost savings to user and province in adopting this logical change.

I have asked OPP, RCMP and municipal police officers why we need front plates. They say they don't know why and don't need/use them in investigations or in traffic stops.

My historic vehicle was not manufactured with a front plate. Putting one on requires me to damage my vehicle to do so. Other provinces do not require front plates and manage to do so with no problems.....????

Why have two plates when you only need one?

Cheesy GET from a an OPP officer who was basically goofing before quiting time. I have run my vintage car over 6 years without a plate - no problem. Not a great way to make the OPP popular with the public. A collosal waste of my time for a stupid law. Get rid of it!

Having moved from another province that hasn't required front plates in probably 20 years, none of my cars even had a plate holder for the front plate. The manufacturer has different grill designs for provinces with and without front plates. What a nuisance, not to mention the grilling I got from CBSA agent.

I haven't heard hundreds of dollars worth of damage over the years as a result of people backing into and debris hitting front license plate brackets and the plate itself this is a ridiculous redundant practice that only puts money into the pockets of manufacturers

Another reason to remove the front plate is, in winter months they are completely obscured by road salt and dirt. The front plate is unreadable for a good portion of the year.

Another commentator made the suggestion that people just remove the front plate. If enough car owners did this it would make the law unenforceable.

My husband had to drill holes in the front of his Alberta purchased vehicle when he moved to Ontario. Boy, was he pissed!!! It really destroys the look of a car. All your points were valid and I hope we follow the other provinces and have only 1 plate.

I was born in manatoba and lived in Saskatchewan for 5 years there was no law to have a front plate why is it any different here makes no since to me there is no sticker on it for cars regardless and half the time it can't be seen unless the police are behind you anyways I say dump the law and crack down on sonthibf with a little more importance. Like people running 15 inch wide wheels on a tiny car with no fender flares or wide body what so ever just plan unsafe

One time I got a ticket after loosing my front plate during a car wash. It took me, as well as the justice system several months to have the ticket acquitted, after losing time off work and backing up the justice system only for such a minute insignificant charge. The judge had no second thoughts as she also thought this is just an inconvenient ineffective inefficient process we all have to follow.

My plate and associated mounting hardware was driven through my bumper after someone ran into my car in a parking lot. This necessitated replacement of the bumper, and frankly the front plate is redundant anyways so there is no reason it should be there at all.

Dealersgip drilled holes directly into my bumper of my brand new car for it... yet, I want an aftermarket front bumper and now when I sell the OEM, I have to sell a new part that has holes in it... AMONG OTHER REASONS! Hate that ON still follows this...

Front plates are ugly!

I drive a Spyder and I have no spot to put a plate in the front. Back then I used to strap it in my grill, but it fell off right on the high way flying over the cars behind me, it even damaged my bumper's grill! This is ridiculous, I've been told by cops that I have to basically drill holes in to my bumper damaging it to put the plates on which will not happen! Plus these plates look so bad when you put them on it ruins collectable cars' looks! It might not mean much to some people, but for car enthusiasts who really care about their cars, this is a huge deal! Just the rear plates are enough, front plates law does not make any sense!

We should follow the more enlightened provinces like Quebec and Saskatchewan rather than bogging our cars down due to bureaucratic red tape and the decisions of out-of-touch officials.

It's been proven that the rear plate is more than enough, and the front plate just ruins the car and deminishes the value because you have to drill holes in the front fascia of the vehicle. I don't get it, I moved to Toronto from PEI and we were never required a front plate there. Over here I was never ticketed for not having a front plate on my Bike, but once I bought my car, they ticketed me for not having one in my front bumper!? What kind of a backward law is this? Certain cars don't accommodate for a front license plate forcing you to drill holes in a brand new car bumper to affix brackets. Don't want to do that.

Removing the front plate will make a larger difference in the long run. If there is no bulky piece of metal on the front end to disrupt the aerodynamics of the vehicle, cars will in turn require a bit less fuel to get from A to B, and it will generally improve the design of each manufacturer's vehicles. It may not sound like much, but if we can make EVERY vehicle in Ontario slightly more efficient at cutting through the wind, it will indeed make a large difference overall.

The front-end plate is not applicable to motorcycles, motor assisted bicycles, historic vehicles, dealer vehicles or service vehicles. Nor is it a requirement in 9 of the 14 Canadian provinces and territories. It is demonstrably arbitrary. And wasteful - literally double the amount of mining, manufacturing and processing of materials to forge, stamp, issue and mount double the number of plates including sheet metal, screws, nuts, bushings, brackets, ink and plastic, eventually rusting and wasting away on Ontario highways and waterways or, in the best case scenario, landfills. It damages, depreciates and degrades vehicles aesthetically, technically and literally, without sufficient countervailing benefit, interest or purpose. "It helps us catch you if you break a law" doesn't cut it. Good riddance.

As an Ontario native I strongly oppose the front plate requirement. Apart from being a eye soar our plates are made very flimsy and self destruct after a winter of driving, thus requiring drivers to spend time out of their valuable and productive days to replace the plates, furthermore ultimately costing the tax payer more money. The cost alone will be huge considering Ontario is one of the largest province's with the busiest highway in Canada. I also find the stickers on the license plate to be rather useless now with the new plate scanners on cop cars. The police run your plate and can tell right away if your sticker is valid. Plus they put one on the back of your registration. How much would the province or " Tax payers " save with both gone as well. But lets atleast start with the elimination of the front plate please and thank you.

Get rid of this silly law. I got ticketed today and sdjed the officer if ticketed any motorcycles today. He said he didn't. I asked the purpose of a front plate and he said it helped in case of a crime. So I suppose motorcycles and cars with a dealer plate don't commit crimes?? Bloody silly!!

My girlfriend got rear ended and the only damage sustained was the outline of the license plate and the two bolts holding it on... pointless to have front plates in my opinion. Cars look better too and gas mileage will surely increase do to a higher volume of air being able to reach in engine in some cars, and help improve aerodynamics in all.

I do not believe that removal of the front license plate will hamper police. With today’s technology together with the police access to the MTO data base of vehicles, vehicle description are readily available to them. If a criminal wishes to evade police in all likely good they could easily switch the plates. How does that help police? I believe their access to the data base provides a broader range to help with their investigations. A vehicles, make model and colour has always been the staring point. This as always what has been related to the public for citizens to be on the look out for. Many citizens do not or can not remember a license plate but a particular make and model, not a problem. My issue is attaching a front plate to a classic with no factory attachment point and having to modify the car in some way thereby detracting from it or fabricating a one off bracket. Been stopped and lectured for merely carrying the plate in the passenger compartment.I still pay for 2 plates is that not enough. Simply an excuse to support police budgets and up insurance costs. As many Provinces have already abolished the front license plate on vehicles as well as our neighbours to the south, it is time that we follow suit as it is impossible to read a license plate when approaching a vehicle on a highway anyway. Having lived in Alberta and Saskatchewan, I find the use of front license plates redundant.

Just discovered the plastic mounting bracket for the front plate, they screw it directly into the body of the car! Brand new car, already damaged before you even drive it off the lot, the damage, yes, is hidden underneath the plastic mount for the front plate, but thats a compromise in your body's paint, guaranteed rust in a matter of time

Cost, cost, cost! Halve the number of plates, halve the cost to taxpayers. Given the current (10/July/20) economic situation and massive deficits, it is a great place to start trimming fat. Beyond that costs to manufacturers and motorists alike would see a welcomed decrease. As a side, I have always wondered why front plates weren't reverse stamped. I mean, if you look in your mirrors they can't be read as easily as if the text was mirrored. Kind of makes them pointless, no?

The population difference between Saskatchewan to Ontario’s is 14 to 1.....Ford government could save an a solute fortune on cost to produce extra license plates. However that cost is handed to us the consumer anyway.

I have no problem paying for license plates, ownerships, drivers licenses, etc etc... but front license plates not only ruin the look of a car we spend our hard earned money on(and generate tax revenue on the sale and maintenance of...)... but more importantly many front plates impede the cooling system of vehicles. Manufactures develop cooling systems in vehicles to operate with the proper air flow they do not design taking into consideration air flow obstructions.

Requiring front and back liscense plates is stupid af and makes cars look worse

I was given a warning recently for having a really dark tinted front plate cover. The officer let me off with a warning and said that it only benefits me that the police can see the plate. They said it helps them identify a vehicle if it's stolen. I decided to ignore his advice and continued on with my tinted front plate. Keep in mind my rear plate doesn't even have a cover, so it's fully visible. I was stopped again a month later and the warning I guess was recorded in system. I was hit with a $110 ticket right away. I now have no plate cover up front at all. Front plates look stupid, they serve little to no purpose. There may be a 1% chance in a very rare specific situation where an officer may be able to identify a vehicle from the front plate and not the back, just like if I had a plate on my roof.. lol. The cons out weight the pros by a long shot.

Removal of front license plate requirement will save Ontario taxpayers a considerable amount of money every year and bring Ontario in line with the rest of Canada. As of right now, only ON, BC and MB road are use of front license plates on vehicles.

Why Ontario is one of a few left with this rule, I don't know! As a car enthusiast, I know without the front plate block the air flow into the vents would provide much better efficiency and cooling as well. Plus the $$$ saved would help!

There is no use for this, only increases costs for a government that is already over-spending. We are one of the few places in the world that still requires this!

This is so unnecessary. We are one of the few places left in the world that still do this. We almost ended it in 2019, but the Tories failed to do it and the liberals just don't care! They are sucking up to the police force. The truth is, other than it diminishing the car value, it costs the government which has already massively outspent a very ambitious budget, millions each year. It's time to end it.

In 2019 when Doug Ford was considering this, it was quoted as follows "If you eliminate half the license plates in the province you'll eliminate half the opportunities for us to be able to identify people involved in crime," detailed executive director Jeff McGuire of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police to CBC. So my question would be, are provinces that don't require front plates that much more dangerous than Ontario?? Hit and Run situations, crime involving vehicle getaways etc.?? Or, is there statistical data of crime that was solved solely on a witness or victim capturing a front license plate? Is the province even tracking this, or just a big fat NO?

Waste of money. If the police are chasing someone, it's always from behind. It's also an additional source of potential injury if a pedestrian is struck by a car. Motorcycles don't need them, why cars?

It is time to stop this waste of resources, with the scanning technology in police cruisers today the rear plate is easily recognized when passing an on coming car. many other provinces have never required one or have stopped requiring a front plate. I believe Ontario drivers should have a choice, if you want a front plate you can request one but it should not be required unless you are towing something that obscures the rear plate.

I feel that a front plate is completely useless and just another reason for police to pull over someone and waste there time and fine them. I’ve driven without a front plate for years and never had an issue until 1 police decided to ticket me and now I’m debating if it’s worth drilling holes into my bumper or front grill or just keep risking it for 110$ fine.

Loose the front plate in Ontario! I sent an email to MTO when they got rid of the plate sticker suggesting to get rid of the front plate. This will save a lot of money and there is really no need for it anyway. Most other provinces don’t have a front plate either

I own a Porsche the front of this car is to small and the plate gets in the way of air docks, plus looks terrible.

I agree with all of the items mentioned in the petition. Also I drive a european car which does not have a front mount for a licence plate so I am forced to incur the cost of providing and installing a custom mount. This is an unnecessary expense to me and damages my vehicle.

Front plates don't help the police.. suspected vehicles are stopped based on make, model, colour. If an officer is focusing on front license plates and attempting to run it while driving that's clearly unsafe.

I'm from alberta originally, so my car doesn't have a licence plate socket on the front end. So now I have to get a power drill and punch 4 holes into the front end of my new car, and cause damage to it, ruining my re-sale value and blocking my engine air intake. Genius.

The excuse that police have scanning technology in their cruisers so we should continue to have front plates does not make sense. The same technology can easily recognized the rear plate when passing an on coming car. The front plate does not provide additional law enforcement nor safety. Time to get rid of outdated requirement.

Don't ask the police for their opinion, they would probably like a plate on the roof and side doors. If other police jurisdictions have no problem with one plate, are Ontario police just less capable of enforcement?

Front license plates has to be scrapped in ontario. It’s such a trash law going on in Ontario still. And their reasons are so dumb. Like if you are a police investigate crimes your way even if it’s hard for you guys and stop bothering citizens to keep their front plates to make your work easier, cause you guys are getting paid for it, us residents are not getting paid for that. We have no valid reason to keep our front plates. So please make it stop. We need front plates gone.

Car does not have a mounting bracket . The requirement to have a front plate serves little benefit as evidenced by Quebec and other jurisdictions .

Ontario is the only province having dual plates since...1927 (?) Can it be that we are the only ones overdoing it. Cross onto the Quebec side, and their Surete will fine us for not having a front plate while all the other Quebec plated cars...have only one. Help!

My electric vehicle did not come with a front license plate bracket. The dealership wanted to drill in to the front bumper to attach i, I declined.

Enough of Canada has made the switch. Remove the license plate and save plenty of $ for more sufficient government spending. Also police vehicles now have license plate radars equipped which will read all passing vehicles without missing a vehicle as it will be able to read the rear plate after the vehicle passes.
