The decision of having two lunches in a terrible attempt at trying to increase efficiency and productivity within the AAPS. A fulfilling and sufficient time for eating and socializing with friends is something that motivates and reinvigorates students for the second half of the day. It not only relieves stress but it puts students in optimal condition to resume their studies. Breaking the lunch time into 2 separate sections would undermine its very purpose and intention. The mere fact that there is such opposition to this decision and that there is a petition among the students is a sign that having 2 lunches is going to create many future problems.
All other arguments aside, a question we should all ask ourselves is: why didn't we have a say in this decision? Why is it that the "authorities" in the hierarchy of the Ann Arbor Public Schools can make decisions that negatively affect the lives of the students and their families? Taking a Utilitarian standpoint, we can clearly see that the interests of the majority have not been taken into consideration by breaking lunch into 2 absurdly short segments.
If there is in fact something that we (as students) are missing, I doubt that we would not be willing to listen to the reasons why. To the authorities who came up with this decision, please convince us how a segmented lunch would help us. If not, let us put the decision to a district-wide vote, and see what would prove to do the most good.

Last year, students went to school with the knowledge that there was always time to meet with teachers, clubs, or peers during the shared lunch period. This year, the split lunches will create confusion and scheduling issues for everyone.

The split lunch idea is not beneficial to this organization. The student body firmly believes that the combination of lunch periods between all the grade levels will allow for a greater collaborative environment and will enable the students to collaborate between the grade levels and thus increase the educative environment of our school.

Having two lunches is frankly a waste of time, and the fact that we may or may not be able to sit with our friends is unreasonable.
