This issue arises every decade or so as a result of outside agitators coming in to light a fire. However, this time I feel the board will actually act on dissolving our mascot and partake in the “whitewashing” of our school, our beginning, our heritage. My parents moved into the district in the 70’s because of its diversity; it’s tribute to honoring Indians. We are Cherokee. The mascot is a symbol of honor, of prestige. By removing all the “Indians” of the world, we will just be leaving all the “Cowboys” of the world. How much more whitewashed can you get. By removing our beloved “Redskin” name, you will be participating in exactly what you are trying to eliminate, racism. By taking him away, it’s saying ,”The Redskin” doesn’t deserve to be in a place of honor, in unity. I heard that little ones are asking in an ashamed manner of why we have the name “Redskin” as a mascot. The answer is simple; it’s a place of honor to always remember the ones who came before us who were brave enough to come together when the world wanted everyone to be torn apart. Teach them that this honor will be questioned as bigotry again and again. Stand strong in keeping the honor alive or bend and pick another “white” approves, safe mascot. The national mob are erasing ALL logos of color; don’t be a part of it. Keep our beloved “Redskin”; fly him with pride; and educate why that symbol is one of unity, not division!

I myself, do not see anything wrong with keeping the name as Redskins. Once a Redskin always a Redskin. I am proud to be a Union Redskin. Just because we have some that want to change it for their comfort, does not give them the right to jump into mine. Leave it be!

My family has three generations of Redskin students. It would break our hearts for the name to be changed. We have American Indian blood and we’re always proud of the name. I will ALWAYS be a REDSKIN!!!

Instead of people thinking of it as an insult why can't they see it as a tribute to the Indian heritage?!? It's crazy how people want to get all worked up about it after ALL THIS TIME ! RIDICULOUS !
