The job of the police is to protect the innocent not to kill or harm them.

I saw racism on our campus while I was there. I worry about the students who are currently at Allegheny, and about the future of the College. I refuse to support Allegheny in any way, including financially, until you prove you can take direct and concrete actions against white supremacy on campus. The orriginal letter to the community was too little too late. The administration can do better. This is no time to “play it safe.” You cannot keep everyone happy - it is about doing the right thing. This is not a movement, it is THE MOVEMENT. Prove we are on the right side of history.

I am a 2016 graduate of Allegheny college and from what I saw at Allegheny, during my time there, black voices on campus were not taken seriously or heard. Allegheny needs more than a couple of classes that center on the experience of minorities. Allegheny needs institutional change that supports students of color and especially black students. Please follow the suggestions in the petition.

Every day there is a violation of our statement of community, yet beyond hiring Dean Dukes (who I know would have written a very different response by herself) Allegheny has done nothing substantive toward making the statement of community an embodied or cultural reality at Allegheny. In addition to the demands in the petition the college must hold itself accountable to the campus and larger black community and for any violation of the statement of community.
