Yeah I thought alleghenys response was really weak and I felt a little embarrassed to have graduated from there. I know a wealthy liberal arts college in rural PA shouldnt be expected to have the best political tales but I'd imagine many students facutly and professors would expect more in this current climate. Black lives matter and ACAB, cheers!

I was an Allegheny student from 2014 until 2016. I remember that when Trump got elected in the fall if 2016, my partner was worried for my safety in Meadville and at Allegheny because I am a brown Mexican. I also vividly remember venturing out in a van for an environmental studies class and seeing Confederate flags in yards just minutes from campus. I think Allegheny needs to seriously address the racism and white supremacy in their own surrounding community. As a mostly white school, you should instead be sharing reflections on how you reinforce racist systems rather than plead for more justice and equality. Your heart is in the right place, but it's not enough. You need to say that it's unacceptable to be flying the flag of slavery minutes away from your campus. You need to condemn the racism in rural white communities. "It's not enough to be non racist, you must be actively anti- racist" is a common motto that is being embraced right now. You as an institution must embody that and do the work against racism.

It is imperative that Allegheny College recognizes that the burden of challenging systemic racism falls on white folks and people in power, rather than demanding people of color take responsibility for what is inflicted on them.

Class of 2014. As the petition notes, Allegheny has not done enough in the past to address issues of racial injustice, including those on our own campus. Let's make new leadership a chance to do better--starting here, and continuing.
