Offering 3 dates to meet the required 2 Philmont shakedowns
We support changing Troop 3's current offering of 2 Philmont shakedowns to at least 3. Currently, each boy and adult is required to attend 2 shakedowns with only 2 dates offered in April and May, in the thick of high school and club sports commitments for most and two world championships for another.
For August 2017, 16 boys and 8 adults have paid $1600 each to attend a 75 mile hike in New Mexico. We want to ensure every boy has the ability to balance scouting needs and other high rewarding activities, without forfeiture of $1600. These boys want to go to Philmont, so we should devise a logical plan to make that happen.
While we had a "social contract" established a year ago with 2 dates that were established a year ago for 24 people, it is obvious now that having no alternatives to the 2 dates offered for 2 mandatory shakedowns was a mistake to accommodate all the unseen future events. In Troop 3, we have always had the tradition of offering multiple opportunities if a "mandatory" requirement is issued like the many hikes offered to attain the hiking merit badge.
We support having 3 dates from which scouts can choose 2 dates. Those who have already made plans around the announced dates in April and May can stick to that plan, but the boys who have conflicts can also be accommodated.
