The Harm of Ocean Park Dolphin Shows
Ocean Park dolphin shows are harmful to dolphins and should be permanently discontinued. The shows give entertainment and give a good learning experience, but at the cost of the dolphins themselves. The captivity, training and capturing them all inflicts suffering on these intelligent, adorable and sentient beings.
Firstly, the very act of capturing dolphins is traumatic. It often results in the dolphins being hurt or even killed. In captivity, they are kept in unnatural living conditions that lead to severe physical and mental health issues. It is heartbreaking that many dolphins are treated regularly with ulcer and antidepressant medication to relieve them of their suffering from the cruel living conditions and forced behaviors for dolphin shows. Some tanks that they are kept in are no larger than twice the size of their body. This can be especially harmful to wild sea creatures that can swim up to 150 km a day. The tanks expose them of dangers, exposing them to sickness and heatstroke related to living in contaminated water. For outdoor tanks, they cannot swim to deep waters to avoid heat in hot weather. In these inhumane conditions, their well being is compromised, leading to dolphins dying and tragic incidents occurring. There is a rumor about a 14 year old dolphin attempting suicide by slamming into a wall.
Regardless of whether or not the rumor was true, it shows a blatant disregard for their natural needs and welfare. We must take action now by advocating for their rights and working together to prevent them from suffering any longer.
This is so sad. Why are we still doing these shows in 2017? Dolphins are way too smart to be stuck in those tiny concrete circles for our entertainment. End this now.
