DDOT has formally notified us that they are withdrawing the current 8th Street reconfiguration plans. We will continue to monitor their upcoming traffic studies to ensure no similar proposals are introduced without adequate community oversight.

We, the undersigned individuals, businesses, school administrators and residents of ANC 5E01 area strongly oppose the recommendations of DDOT to extend the Metropolitan Branch Trail on 8th Street, NE between Monroe and Franklin Streets due to undo influence, lack of adequate notification and proper representation by residents of the community.

DDOT’s proposal will: 1) Eliminate over 90 parking spaces where there is already a shortage; 2) Adversely alter traffic patterns on 7th and 8th Streets; 3) Relocation of bus stops will eliminate additional parking; 4) Hamper businesses from attracting and maintaining customers; 5) Jeopardize access to services for those requiring health care aids; 6) Cause people to have to park further from their destination in an area where there has been an uptick in shootings, murders, robberies and assaults; 7) Adversely impact the quality and character of life in the neighborhood.

We need to hit the 250 signature threshold before I submit our formal request for a meeting with DDOT leadership. Reaching this target provides the necessary leverage to challenge the current proposal and demand a review based on our community concerns.

One way streets divide neighbourhoods, cause increased energy consumption, lead to road rage, and separate structures on those streets from their adjacent urban fabric. I absolutely am AGAINST turning 8th street one-way.

There is SO MUCH wrong with this plan! It will put the hardware store out of business for sure. How will customers find it? And tractor trailers and tow trucks will have to drive on one block, 2-side parking, narrow residential streets to get to Sunbelt Rentals, the body shop, Annie’s Ace Hardware. Etc. etc.

I both ride a bike (including with my kids) and drive on this street regularly. The advantages of a protected bike lane are far outweighed by the inconvenience a switch to one way will cause of drivers and businesses. Traffic is consistently light, and there is a wide sidewalk.

There is no available parking on this street as it is. This was especially difficult for me when I was temporarily disabled an unable to walk without difficulty. Making this street one-way would be disastrous.

This will cause major challenges for the schools and businesses in the community. I oppose this project, but would ask that another solution be proposed that would allow for pedestrians, bike riders, and cars to all safely move through the neighborhood.

Although I don't have handicap tags on my car, my husband has cancer and we need to park as close our apartment as we can. He is getting weaker in his walking.
