Create a safe Oak Grove Elementary walking community
We are the Safe Routes to School Committee of Oak Grove Elementary School. We want to encourage children to walk or bike to school safely. Activities we have sponsored include walk/bike to school days, education campaigns, walking school buses, and parent surveys. We have learned from the surveys that certain infrastructure changes must be put into place to make this possible. They include: 1) Construction of sidewalks on Oak Grove (opposite the school) between Lavista and Briarcliff. Sidewalks on North Akin Drive and Kirkland. 2) Installation of a crosswalk or traffic light to serve the pedestrians on the westbound side of Oak Grove north of the school. 3) Speed monitoring devices on both sides of the school on Oak Grove. 4) Traffic study and appropriate infrastructure change during school arrival and dismissal times at Crestline Drive and Oak Grove. We urge the local government including the Dekalb County Public Works Department and State Department of Transportation to strongly consider our proposal. We believe in being proactive rather than retroactive after an unfortunate incident.
