New York State Residents Opposed To High School Closed Campus Petition for New York State
Dear Senator / Representative ________________,
My name is Sean Patrick Lahti. I am currently a high school senior at Ward Melville High School in East Setauket New York. I am writing this letter to address a concern of mine and many other New York State high school students.
There is currently a bill pending, bill number A09619, which prohibits high school students from leaving the school premises via motor vehicle during school hours. While we know that our representatives are trying to protect us, we feel that the bill is extremely unfair and unreasonable. There are tens of thousands of responsible high school students who drive to and from school and activities every day in a safe, law abiding, and trustworthy manner. Those of us who are trustworthy and law abiding should not be penalized for the irresponsible few who chose to make extremely poor decisions.
Please take our position seriously. We look forward to voting in the near future and we would like to be able to go into the voting booth knowing that our elected officials took our viewpoints seriously.
Please find the enclosed attached petitions signed by New York State residents who oppose the pending bill.
I have been reading through all the comments people are leaving and honestly it is wild to see how many people felt the exact same way but just never had a place to say it out loud until now. I feel like I am constantly checking my email for an update on that bill because the silence from the people who are actually supposed to be representing us is getting pretty loud if you think about it too much. My desk is currently a total disaster zone of these printed forms but I promise it is all going somewhere useful as soon as I can figure out the best way to get them into the right hands.

Ridiculous overreach. Maybe focus on actual problems instead of worrying about where kids eat lunch.

What a joke. If kids are driving safely they should be left to handle their own business. The school cafeteria food is garbage anyway.

Seriously? We pay taxes for these schools and now they want to lock us in? No thanks.

Total control freak move by the state. My son is a better driver than half the adults on the road. Fix the actual roads instead.

This is ridiculous. If I can drive to school I should be able to get lunch. Stop treating us like little kids.

I worked hard to get my license and my car. I earned the right to drive myself to get a slice of pizza. Leave us alone.
