(NOTE: this petition is for New York State residents only.) An ostomy is a surgically created opening on the abdomen for elimination of waste, usually as a result of cancer, disease or trauma. Life can go on with a new normal after ostomy surgery, except when patients are unable to get insurance coverage for supplies, or are limited in their selection or amount of supplies. This is the case with certain New York State (NYS) insurance plans, some private insurances, or managed care plans. A bill has been introduced into the NYS Assembly (bill # A8137) and the Senate (bill # S5937), requiring insurance coverage for ostomy supplies. We, the undersigned, strongly urge that you recognize the importance of these supplies for NYS ostomy patients, and support these bills.
