NYS Central School Districts - Representative Voting Districts

With the current push by Governor Cuomo to consolidate Central School Districts throughout the state, the need for a Representative Voting District (ward) system in the elected representation of school Board of Education trustees is more important than ever.
The concept of “at large” representation in large central school districts is insufficient to ensure fair representation to all residents of the district. The current “at large” concept allows one region within a district with high voter turnout, to completely overwhelm the votes of other regions in the same district.

Having the option to divide a school district into distinct wards where each region has a representative or two on the Board of Education could be an excellent path towards fair and equal representation. This concept is no different than the US House of Representatives, NYS Assembly, NYS Senate and many towns in our state.
To the NY State Senate and Assembly: Please put forth a law allowing Central School Districts the opportunity to implement a ward system for the election of representatives for their School District Board of Education.
