We, the undersigned, see great opportunity in our move to a new building to further our schools’ mission to provide law in the service of human needs. The sale of fair trade organic coffee furthers our mission by providing fair compensation to farmers and workers, while also advocating for new system that rids our political system of the influence of corporate interests that are often adversarial to human needs and thus the mission of our school. As a result, we would strongly encourage the administration and faculty to permit the NY Democracy Project to operate a Democracy Café in the new building, which would (1) provide the school with fair trade organic coffee, (2) educate future public interests lawyers about the economic and social issues that face our communities as a result of the influence corporations and the wealthy have on local, state, and federal elections, and (3) use its proceeds to demand an alternative, full public-financed campaign system in which the people’s interests are not drowned out by big corporate money.
