New York City Sports Enthusiasts:

Those of us who are passionate about playing sports in the NYC parks need your help! Throughout this spring, the Parks Department has been unresponsive to repeated requests for minimal maintenance on many fields throughout the city, refusing to provide even the basics like lights and playable field conditions. For example:
  • The lights at the East River fields have not been working reliably all season.
  • Several fields (East River, Harlem River and Dewitt Clinton) have been unusable even on beautiful days because post-storm maintenance has been non-existent.
The conditions on many fields range from unpleasant to unsafe. Our requests for remedies have been received with either misinformation (for example: the lights have been fixed) or with the response that the city has other priorities. Other priorities? Are the members of the league sports community irrelevant to the Parks Department officials?

Through the poor maintenance of fields, the Parks Department is discouraging league sports like softball and touch football which have provided countless hours of outdoor fun for generations of New Yorkers.

If you support our position that the Parks Department respect the sports community and its need for safe and active use of our park facilities, please sign our petition. We plan to deliver it to the Parks Department this summer.

The lights at East River are a joke. Trying to play a league game in the dark is dangerous and a total liability. Fix them already.

NYC is collecting taxes but can't turn on a light switch. Embarrassing.

My team is sick of getting games cancelled because nobody bothers to drain the fields after a light rain. Get it together.

Ridiculous that my fees go to nothing. The field at Dewitt Clinton is just a swamp right now. Waste of money.
