This current Lacrosse season started last fall. My little sister, Lucy, wasn't allowed to play with her team for the first time. She'd played boys lacrosse for 2 years, because when she started, there wasn't a girls team in her age group. She's since played with the local boys team and not only has she fit right in, she excelled. She was one of the best players on her team, even when you considered her smaller stature. But now she has been told she can no longer play her sport, because of her sex. Girls Lacrosse and Boys Lacrosse are fundamentally different sports. The rules are different, different skills are valuable in each, even the equipment is built differently. Lucy is being told to leave her sport and start, not from square one, but from a disadvantage because she would need to unlearn almost everything before she started playing girls lacrosse. She'd need entirely new equipment. This is wrong. My family has tried appealing directly to the Board, but we were turned away. They even requested that tryouts be held, so, if she was turned away, it was because of her skills, not her gender. We want to show them that we haven't given up. That it is not okay to turn a little girl away simply because she is a girl. That this kind of behavior is not only not acceptable, but downright discriminatory. At the very least, your involvement will help show Lucy that she shouldn't ever accept treatment like this. But, this has the power to do so much more than that. It will both draw attention to the issue and put pressure on the board. It will provide legitimacy to my family's complaints and force them to take this seriously. Please sign our petition and show your support for all girls, whatever they want to do or be!
