Students at West Virginia University can obtain contraception methods free of cost through the WVU Student Health Service. Contraception is funded and provided by the State of West Virginia Family Planning Program, of which the Student Health Service is a participant. The state program is funded in part by the federal Department of Health and Human Services under Title X. Currently, the Family Planning Program carries contraceptive pills, shots, the patch, condoms, etc., but not the only contraceptive ring, NuvaRing. Approved by the FDA in 2001, NuvaRing is a convenient, effective, and low-estrogen alternative to existing birth control options. (See the links at right for more information.) The State is unable to provide the NuvaRing due to lack of funding. However, the documented demand for new contraception options are taken into account when funds become available. That
