In recent years a new undiscovered group of people known as the Nukak-Maku have been discovered in the Republic of Colombia, in South America. There are a guestimated 250-500 of the Nukak-Maku people left today. Sadly, this group of people and their original ways of life are constantly threatened and their community is dissolving rapidly for a handful of reasons. First is because of Guerilla and Government conflicts. If you are not familiar with who the Guerillas are, they are a group of illegal drug cartels mostly known for mass producing cocaine. Because of the Guerillas almost all Nukak-Maku members have been forced out of their original lands by these gangs so to claim Nukak territories to continue the growth and development of the cocaine businesses. Often these delicate Nukak people are turning up in modernized areas, leaving their homes in the rain forests, and have no where to go, no knowledge of the outside world, and do not even know how to speak Spanish to communicate with the world outside of their original one. Even more sad is the leader of this tribe of people recently killed himself in 2006 due to the stress of not being able to help his people. His name is Mao-Be and he was able to speak Spanish to help communication and gain help efforts for his people. This group of people are in serious threat to no longer existing due to all these reasons. The Colombian government has yet to establish an order of protection and land sanctuary for these people and they will cease to exist if we don't spread the word and get awareness out worldwide. Besides establishing protected grounds for the Nukak-Maku for a reason to sign this petition, we have seen this sort of thing happen time and time again with other cultural groups. The strongest examples being what had happened to our Native Americans here in the United States. So please, out of an act of humanity, sign this petition and help save these precious people from perishing from the face of the earth. Thank you!
