I was a high risk of ppd and still I went in diagnosed for over a year! I was a single young mother and had no support, Now I might still be a single mother the second time around but this time I’ve had support and the fact I’ve lived in both worlds is horrible! Having all the support needed is so crucial specially with any mental health complication but to be a new mother and have no support but the support given isn’t sufficient, it’s cruel , out dated , doesn’t work and the ones that suffer most is the mother and child! It shouldn’t even be up for discussion, any woman seeking mental health health, specially after having a baby should get all the support required, that’s what the mother deserves and that beautiful baby! I’m now able to enjoy my second child and not be sitting 24/7 in constant torment because the facilities you have aren’t Adequate at all, These woman are from all walks of life and some are suffering from mental health illnesses already, like PTSD from either childhood abuse- domestic violence ect so to expect them to then try and heal with the opposite sex waking around and let’s age bit these men aren’t stable ! Who wouldn’t be scared and who would deny the “ help and support” if that’s what you’re offering! So many woman are suffering because they don’t wish to be in that type of hospital! The fact this hasn’t already been done and sorted for mother’s and their babies is absolutely ludicrous!! Shame on you government for ignoring basic human rights !

I was separated from my first baby, after avoiding hospital for a long time and getting extremely ill. I would have had better interventions and not gotten as unwell if I had access to a mother baby unit early on

A public funded MBU literally saved my life and also saved me from an abusive relationship, without it myself and my then baby (now 10yo) would not be on this earth today!

Ludicrous that this is not already in place...

I am very concerned that such a unit does not already exist. The situation of a mother and baby is quite distinct and requires special consideration, not only for the mother's sake but also the ongoing mental health of the child.

Totally agree. Both my daughters suffered from post natal psychosis. They were in general psych units. Could not have their babies with them. A terrible experience for the whole family. We live in Queensland. I hope this petition helps to get the proper facilities and care that mums, babies and their families need.

Mothers and babies should not have to be separated from each other if facing mental health issues due to a lack of access to top hospital, a huge cost which is not affordable for all women.

Two precious children, two awful experiences of Postnatal Psychosis. Public Mother Baby Unit is so important for complete family care with short and long term benefits.

Babies deserve to be cared for by their mothers, especially when their mothers are unwell. The long term emotional and psychological effects on both mother and baby would have greater outcomes if they are kept together.

This is an unacceptable situation.

I have provided training systems support for Westmead over a number of years and witnessed and know the mix of needs that exist in that region. The requirement for Mother and Baby support is very high and requires urgent attention.
