At the April 6th, 2010, Curriculum Committee meeting, Nova’s Executive Director, Mr. Brian Bloomfield, made a motion that Mr. Rovn move forward with the 10th grade health curriculum, using the ETR HealthSmart texts. This motion passed by a vote of 7 to 4.

At the April 19th, 2010, Nova Board of Directors meeting, a Director made a motion to select another curriculum that is less controversial than the ETR HealthSmart curriculum to use in the 10th grade sexual education portion of the Health class. This motion failed for lack of a second. Therefore, it was not allowed procedurally to come to a vote. The consensus among the remaining Board Members was that the Curriculum Committee, Administration, and Mr. Rovn, would continue to move forward with using ETRs HealthSmart texts for 10th grade sexual education at Nova.

At the May 4th, 2010, Curriculum Committee meeting, a motion was made to form a sub-committee of the Curriculum Committee to take one month to look at other possible curricula that would be less controversial and more in line with Nova’s value-centered philosophy.  This motion passed, with only Mr. Brian Bloomfield voting against it.  Although this vote is encouraging, it is by no means a guarantee that ETR’s HealthSmart will not be used as the sexual education curriculum at Nova. As it stands, ETR’s HealthSmart texts are still the only curriculum that the Curriculum Committee has approved.

Please join me in this petition to oppose any use of ETR’s HealthSmart for sexual education at Nova Classical Academy:

We, the parents of Nova’s students, oppose using any part of ETR’s HealthSmart Curriculum for sexual education at Nova Classical Academy. We call upon the members of the Curriculum Committee and the Nova Classical Academy Board of Directors to remain faithful to one of Nova’s foundational premises that parents are the primary educators of their children. As such, the school’s role must be viewed as a supportive one to the family in educating their child(ren), particularly in the area of sexuality education, which includes issues of morality, spirituality, and emotional well-beging.

We find the ETR HealthSmart texts to be morally offensive and unacceptable for use at Nova Classical Academy. We are asking that our voices be heard in opposition to the use of the ETR HealthSmart Curriculum in any form in the development of Nova Classical Academy’s sexual education curriculum.
