We the undersigned call upon the Canadian Government of all levels (federal, provincial, municipal) to force retailers to cease Christmas and related holiday décor, sales, and promotions prior to Remembrance Day, November 11th. Every year, stores, malls, and business are eager to push holiday promotions earlier and earlier. We feel that the Canadian public is sick of this gratuitous display of greed and wanton consumerism which not only dilutes the meaning of Remembrance day but also damages the meaning of the Christmas (and related holiday) seasons. In particular, Remembrance Day is a day of reflection to honour the sacrifices of our nation’s soldiers, and veterans both past and present. The pretense of “holiday cheer” by stores, malls, and business is clearly an unchecked insult to the honour of our service men and women and we are calling on the Canadian Government at all levels to support a ban on Christmas and related holiday promotions by retailers until after November 11th.
