In light of the recent government proposal to force all dog owners to purchase 3rd party liability insurance, as a little old lady with a gentle, diabetic Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, I invite all responsible dog owners to join me in petitioning the Government against this ill-considered, fag-packet wheeze. Does anyone believe that insurance will prevent one single child or pet being attacked and possibly killed by vicious dogs? Of course not, because the thugs who breed and own killer fighting dogs will completely ignore the law, as will those irresponsible dog owners who keep larger, aggressive breeds without exercising control. The vast majority of dog owners are responsible. What's needed is for the government to force police to do their job of actually protecting the public; to seize all vicious dogs owned as weapons and have them put down, and to follow up every complaint against the other irresponsible owners of dogs known in a community to be a risk to others. Has this fag end government actually considered the effects of introducing compulsory insurance? Financially some owners may not struggle to pay insurance but what of those of can't afford to? What are their options? Abandon their pet (the pet charities will love that)? Have it put to sleep? Ignore the law (as will the thugs)? Well, Mr Alan Johnson, I know which option I'll choose - the police will have to drag this little old pensioner kicking and screaming to prison before I'll submit to this one!
