Notification Character Limit

Our iPhone notifications are inferior to most notifications in the market. They are currently capped at 10 characters! That's not long enough to say "You are awesome". As a chat first app, our users should be able to, at a glance, look at their notifications and get a feeling for what incoming messages are.
What is the solution?
Ideally I would like to see a similar limit as other messaging apps, 250 for Telegram (a secure messenger) or 350 for iMessage.
But I would settle for 50 characters, I would even settle for 25. 10 is just not enough, it's basically a joke. When a group is talking and I'm not on my phone, I don't have any hints as to what they are talking about when I look at my notifications. This really puts a handicap on Kik
What about Android?
Android notifications are capped at 10 words or 50 characters, so it's not a problem.
Why do we have the 10 character limit?
1. Read receipts:
we're worried that if someone sees more than 10 characters it should be considered as a "read" message. A little weird because our in app message preview is approximately 25 characters long.
2. Encryption
We currently don't have encryption turned on, but when we do, the notification is sent to Apple unencrypted (by us). A solution for users is to have a setting that can toggle whether or not you want to send message previews
