WE, The Property Owners of Pine Knoll Shores, deserve justification and a full accounting for the proposed tax increase, especially since tax revaluations are being assessed. We are living in difficult and uncertain times, many people have lost their jobs, nearby municipalities have laid off both full and part time employees, and offered severance packages.
PKS Town Management views our shared scenario as quite the opposite, proposing significant salary increases and no lay-offs. The Citizens deserve to see any study suggesting these increases are required, especially now. The last tax increase was in 2014 and the tax rate changed from 0.156 to 0.197.
If your 2020 assessed value is $450,000 your taxes in PKS will increase 10% from a 2019 assessed value of $425,000 or the equivalent of almost $225. What additional benefits are accruing to the property owners? What funding can be postponed versus what needs to be acted on now to prepare us for hurricane seasons to come.

I have spent this week reviewing the official budget documents to identify specific discrepancies in the town's financial projections. Several property owners have contacted me to express their frustration regarding the lack of transparency in this decision process. Our next step is to present these findings directly to the town council during the upcoming public hearing.

The level of engagement regarding this tax proposal demonstrates that our community expects greater financial transparency. It is clear that Pine Knoll Shores property owners are unwilling to accept these fiscal changes without a detailed explanation of the necessity. I intend to present this collective demand for accountability to the town management during the coming public hearings.

Property value increases in and by themselves produce higher tax revenues without a new tax increase. PKS should live within its means and reduce staff hours or postpone capital expenditures until revenues support them.
Agree completely with the above and suggest posting all line items of general fund. We have the right to know and understand salary details of any and all public officials. Generically referring to details without disclosing full details of the survey is only sharing part of the story and conveniently framing the conversation to the presentor's agendas.

Not a good time to increase taxes. Curious about the proposed 17% increase in pay for public service employees. Don't know what they make, but that seems like too much.

With this tax increase it looks like PKS residents will be paying 40% more in our property tax bill than Emerald Isle Residents. PKS proposed tax rate per $100 of assessed value after tax increase is $21.7 cents – Property tax on a $350,000 assessed home in PKS $759.50 Emerald Isle is not going raise property taxes in this years budget and stays at $15.5 cents per $100 of assessed value – Property tax on a $350,000 assessed home in Emerald Isle is $542.50 To summarize the findings property taxes in Pine Knoll Shores are 40% higher than in Emerald Isle (($21.7 cents - $15.5 cents)/$15.5 cents) So the same $350,000 home assessed home in Pine Knoll Shores is $217 higher in property taxes than Emerald Isle. Property taxes in Pine Knoll Shores will be going up more than 10% over last years rate. In addition we just learned that Carteret County plans to increase county taxes by the same $2 cents per $100 of assessed property value. Plus at the last PKS BOC meeting the township employees are looking to increase salaries of a number of town employees: the flowing in an excerpt from May 5th article out of the Carteret News-Times https://www.carolinacoastonline.com/news_times/article_f5f9d33a-8e1e-11ea-a62a-df8d926e4db0.html .....The draft budget also includes pay increases for various positions. The board in July requested a comprehensive pay study, according to Ms. Anderson. “The town deserves quality people and wants the best,” she said. “We don’t want to lose people just because of money. Those were the sentiments expressed by the board (in July 2019).” Ms. Anderson said the results of the study showed to be competitive in the market, the following average pay increases should be included with the draft budget: Planning, inspections, human resources and administration positions – 3.6% Police positions – 5.7% Fire/EMS positions – 10.8% Public services positions – 17% Ms. Anderson said the police and fire/EMS chiefs’ positions were already
Not a good time for tax increases for any reason. Look around us at the other locate towns, no increases!! Elected officials need to figure out how to balance our budget without any increases! That is why they were elected.

More people than ever have lost their jobs and businesses do to the virus and shutdown. Many that are working are being asked to take a decrease in pay to keep there jobs. Cut back hours of office personnel, use office time wisely. This is a not the time for this when our situation is still uncertain!
