I see people smoking right in front of the library doors. One of the Williams Science Center's entrances seems to have become a smokers' hangout spot. When walking to class or entering a building, I frequently end up walking behind or past a smoker. In these situations, I try to hold my breath, but this doesn't always protect me. Secondhand smoke can cause cancer. Secondhand smoke is classified as a "known human carcinogen" (cancer-causing agent) by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the US National Toxicology Program, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a branch of the World Health Organization. In United States alone, every year, second hand smoke is responsible for 3,400 lung cancer deaths. There are many pregnant women on campus. Pregnant women exposed to secondhand smoke are at increased risk of having low birth- weight babies. The more secondhand smoke you are exposed to, the higher the level of these harmful chemicals in your body. There are many children on campus. Second hand smoke increases the number and severity of asthma attacks in about 200,000 to 1 million children who have asthma every year. When non-smokers are exposed to secondhand smoke it is called involuntary smoking or passive smoking. Non-smokers who breathe in secondhand smoke take in nicotine and other toxic chemicals just like smokers do. Inhaling secondhand smoke causes lung cancer and coronary heart disease in healthy nonsmoking adults and increases the risk of serious respiratory problems in children. It is wrong for smokers to smoke where ever they please; they are not adhering to the current guidelines. The current guidelines are too weak, but I think they would listen to a fine.
