There's no real reason why these rigs couldn't be battery powered electric. They could charge their batteries by day.

The uncobtrolled number of illegal rigs has been going on for a few years without regulation. Rigs fish near residential areas causing nouse pollution, fish in breeding areas & bays which is illegal

The constant noise of rigs near the shore is disturbing the peace. Polution of the leaking fuel into the lake is a huge concern aswell. Theft especially on lake front properties has increased.

Kapenta rigs are not only noisy but puts people's life at risk as they don't have proper waste disposal management ,

The kapenta rigs are very noisy at night because they come very close to the beach. We have had 5 groups of tourists leave early, not completing their stay, because of the noise. It is no exaggeration that the noise is very loud and disturbs people sleeping. Also, the oil slicks on the water from the engines are a pollution problem. The people of Siavonga drink the lake water, but no amount of boiling or sanitising can remove the fuel from the water. This is a health hazard. Many people become ill when the lake is low because of the concentration of these toxins in the drinking water. The lake can sustain a certain number of kapenta rigs. This should be strictly enforced to ensure the well being of the people of Siavonga.

Hotel Director. (Eagles Rest). Kapenta Rigs are driving tourists out of Siavonga with their incessant noise and glaring lights from dusk to dawn. In 2013, the District Council understood the problem and passed a by-law banning Kapenta fishing from Banana Island to the Dam Wall. For political reasons this was somehow blocked and never reached the Minister of Local Government for ratification. If the Government has the desire to make Siavonga a tourist destination then something MUST be done about this.
