Michigan Republicans Against Medicaid Expansion (HB 4714)
WHEREAS, the passage and implementation of House Bill 4714 (Substitute H-3) (“HB 4714”) is not consistent with the conservative values published in the 2012 Republican Platform, which states that Republicans will work to repeal Public Law 111–148, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“PPACA”) in all of its forms;
WHEREAS, one in five Michigan residents is already on Medicaid and Medicaid expenses are already the largest growing portion of the state budget;
WHEREAS, the monies offered from the federal government will only cover 100% of the costs of expansion for 3 years, after which Michigan taxpayers must pay the remaining 10% for the estimated 300,000 - 600,000 additional recipients;
WHEREAS, the US Supreme Court ruled that the federal government could NOT force states to expand Medicaid and could NOT reduce a state's current Medicaid funding if they did not expand current services;
WHEREAS, members and precinct delegates of the Michigan Republican Party expect their elected officials to uphold the Party platform as adopted by the RNC at the last national convention;
WHEREAS, the aforementioned members and precinct delegates believe in limited government and individual liberty;
THEREFORE, the undersigned call upon their elected officials in the Michigan House of Representatives and Senate, to vote NO on HB 4714, or any other legislation related to an expansion of state Medicaid eligibility and funding, or the implementation and funding of any Health Care Exchange associated with the PPACA within the State of Michigan.
