Urgent action is needed at every level to avoid catastrophic climate breakdown in the coming decades. Neoliberal capitalism enacted by governments and corporations is dragging people and planet off the cliff, so we must use all our strength to change the system. However, as individuals, we must also stop running towards the cliff edge and pushing others towards it. Scientific evidence alone isn't enough to make populist governments change their policies – they only move when they feel the turn of the tide. We are that tide.

This is one of many necessary sacrifices that my generation must make for the next few decades in order for future generations to have a hope of organised global civilisation. Certainly it’s much less of a sacrifice than previous generations had to make - they paid with their lives so that we could exercise democracy, we need to reduce our C02 footprint in order that future generations don’t pay with their lives.

My philosophy degree told me that climate change doesn't matter because the identity of future people is undetermined.
But my Christian faith tells me to love people, with a love which extends to my poor, global and future neighbours.
I will never fly again.

I stopped flying four years ago. I don't miss flying in the slightest and am thoroughly enjoying being a 'groundling'.

I pledge not to fly in2019. For environmental reasons I have not flown since 2011. For the sake of my kids future this is not a hard thing to do. I am also following the other recommendations in IPCC report 2018 chapter 4 table 4.8. Let’s just all do all of this?

I have not flown since 2005 out of concern over climate breakdown. Knowing the huge impact just a single return flight can have on my carbon footprint, a holiday abroad does not seem like a good enough reason to increase the suffering climate breakdown is already inflicting on less fortunate people in vulnerable areas around the world and will continue to inflict for generations to come.
Slow travel is so much more enjoyable
