I have worked with many teachers who have been through the Teacehr at Sea program and what a transformation it has made for the individual and their students.

NOAA Teacher at Sea program has been one of the few long-term programs for educators. Teachers begin to count on opportunities like this, since they have been around for a significant amount of time. Quitting funding now, after the program has been successfully in place for so many years, undervalues the role of this important program in both inspiring teachers and their students, and in sharing this valuable resource with classrooms across the country. Many teachers use the materials from the Teacher at Sea program even if they have not participated as an educator themselves.

This program greatly enriched my teaching, as I experienced marine research first hand. This enables me to relay the work of marine scientists and NOAA officers and ship crew to my students and to better understand the work of NOAA.

Real-world experiences like this are invaluable for classroom teachers. There is no book to read or class to take that can expose teachers to all of the intricacies of full immersion into real-world occupations. These experiences contain near limitless opportunities for classroom applications and lessons.

The NOAA Teacher at Sea is everything that STEM education should be. The teachers who have the honor of being ocean stewards with the scientists and crews on board NOAA ships are truly citizen scientists. Our students--past, present and future--are as involved as we are.

My NOAA TAS trips were key PD experiences because they taught me about how we know what we know in oceanography, and therefore I could effectively teach this to my students and inspire them into marine science careers and other careers in science.

I was a TAS participant a couple of year before I retired from teaching. I believe this experience, above all others that I had in my 31 year career, generated more interest in Science, especially for young women, than any thing I had every done. That the officers of the NOAA ship I sailed on opened their doors for my students and their families on a Saturday acted as glue to cement this experience for the kids That the beautiful young woman Ensign took some of her valuable time and spent a day with my Middle Schoolers really made a huge difference.
