We, residents of Pointe-Claire, QC, ask the council to consider alternatives and enhancements to the composting program, rather than returning to weekly garbage pick-ups in the summer months. Household waste that creates odours can almost entirely be composted and therefore increasing compost pick-up rather than garbage would help solve the issue, but also continue to bring us forwards in regards to sustainable environmental practices. We ask that you consider alternatives such as, but not limited to:
- Increasing compost pick-ups during the summer to 2x per week
- Allowing 'plastic' compostable bags or liners
- Allowing compostable diapers
- Providing grants towards cloth diapers to reduce overall use of disposable diapers
- Increasing education and availability of resources towards better composting habits
The current schedule may have been difficult, but once adopted has resulted in less garbage overall and has pushed households to make more environmental choices overall. The move to compost is a necessary choice for our environment, but one that most people would not have adopted on their own, and therefore the reduction of garbage pick-ups has had a positive impact on overall waste management.
We request hat there be a public forum as well as more transparency surrounding this program and the proposed changes, prior to choosing a course of action that could reverse positive gains to our environment.

I have been reviewing the feedback left on this page and it is clear that many of you share a desire for more robust composting solutions rather than a return to old habits. Conversations are currently underway to request a formal public forum so that our concerns about environmental impact are addressed directly by council members.

Reaching this level of support confirms that many of our neighbors remain deeply committed to modern waste management solutions. This momentum suggests that our community values environmental progress more than a return to old habits.

more education is what is needed. And I like the idea of grants and easier access to cloth diapers.
Perhaps the city can encourage, educate and/or initiate a backyard/garden compost for every household. Reuse, recycle, reduce.
Going back to weekly pickups is like giving up on the environment. We need to be good stewards of our environment. Pointe-Claire residents expect our elected leaders to find solutions!
We already adjusted to garbage pick up once every 2 weeks... Let's be leaders in environmental issues
Only a pick up of the green bin is necessary once a week. Regular garbage every two weeks and blue bin every two weeks to discourage over consumption. People should be fined for dumping their household waste in the park bins. The city has to go door to door and petition with an explanation to all citizens about this.
Increasing garbage pick-ups from current 2x / month, to 4x / month, is socially irresponsible, and a waste (no pun intended) of tax-payer dollars, and also increases the carbon footprint due to increased pick-ups. We should be instead trying to follow the European model of 1 pick-up per month. That is a better sustainable model. I have seen people on my street put their green bins out incorrectly on Tuesdays (ie. not Mondays) and they use the green bins for garbage and also throw out 'compost'. It would be much better to spend the money on training / educational aspects of the citizens of Pointe Claire to be environmentally responsible. You, Mr Mayor, have the opportunity to lead Pointe Claire as the leader in Canada, and in North America. When your best supporter and fan came to our house on your behalf, there was no mention of this doubling garbage pick-up. We elected you for change, and for leadership, for which we are counting upon from you, to lead Pointe Claire into the future, not to take us back into the past. It's my Mr. Mayor, for you to show us your quality.
Those who want more garbage pick-ups simply don't know how to compost.

Perhaps the city can set up a few locations where citizens can bring their mid-week trash and we'll see how many families really need it _before_ we go back to weekly collection.
