We should put our efforts together to declare Olhão a UNESCO world heritage site like the beautiful places already on this list: http://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/pt and stop once and for all the loss of Olhão's uniqueness and charm.

Olhão is so unique and special. It should not only be kept the way it is, but it should be declared a national treasure, and coveted as such, In a world full of change and relentless modernization, Olhão is a pearl that should not be touched. Olhão reminds us of days gone by, with it's wonderful, winding streets and its fresh fish market at the seaside. It is Olhão's charm and historic feel which brings tourists from afar, and keeps it's residents proud. Making these proposed changes would scare away both!

The Houses of Olhao, considered unique and authentic by so many, have been catalogued by the architecture bureau on the plans they made, as incaracteristico, corrente pastiche, urbano corrente, urbano industrial comercial etc... A few have the luck to be described as Art Deco or Romantic , but not one single house is described as "typically Olhanese" ? Should'nt a benchmark be created for the architectural features of such a typical Olhanese house, in order to preserve the unique style of Olhao ?

My wife and I love Olhao. Our retirement plan has been to find and restore a property in the Baixa, where we feel very much at home.
Of course, Brexit has raised some questions for us, but so far it is still our intention to come.
However, I suspect we are not alone in our concerns about what this plan will do.
Olhao is unique and that is its' charm. It does not need to try to emulate the over developed resorts to the west. In fact, development of that type would certainly cause us to reconsider.
I think what would benefit Olhao is continued investment from overseas visitors improving run down properties in which to live, not just for rental.
Hotels cater for tourists and tourism will increase organically as the town develops. That is a good thing in that it brings money to the town. But the proposed plan removes much of the town's attraction.
If this goes ahead I believe Olhao will come to regret the way in which a particular type of tourism will change the town.
Develop the sewage system - Yes. Invest some public money in restoring some of the cubist houses (for sale or rent) - Yes. (That in itself will bring more tourists and future residents with money to spend).
No need for artificial beaches to the west. Once again, Olhao's uniqueness is exemplified by the offshore nature of the island beaches.
Rip up the gardens on the waterfront - unjustifiable.

Enough cultural heritage is destroyed. Seaside highrises will also destroy the narural ventilation system of the old town by blocking the sea wind,

Heritage should be preserved anywhere in the world. Roots count and should be protected for the next generations to come. Don't listen to real estate promotors would just want to make money. This will imbalance the whole ecosystem of your town. Simply say NO!
