I am very concerned about how we manage our teaching, admin and data confidentiality if printers are in a non secure, open area. This plan seems ill-thought through and at risk of contravening at least two acts: Data Protection and the Equality Act.

There is no need to go through a global company to join 'the cloud'. The University of London could get its own piece of the cloud, as could Goldsmiths. So the entire premise of the migration is flawed. Microsoft is a company under pressure, suffering from poor leadership. When it starts selling off sections of its business our data repository could then be sold to an unknown company which may cause even greater concerns than those we are expressing now.

74 signatures in less than two days, and from all around the world. This indicates the depth of feeling at all levels of academe. FYI, staff in Toronto have also been mobilizing against this sort of approach to IT management for research and teaching. See the HIGHLIGHTS rubric for updates and links. Keep spreading the word as we are aiming for 100 sigs by tomorrow, Friday.

This is part and parcel of the consolidation of centralised control in a system which has no tenure and very minimal effective guarantees of academic freedom. And there are also practical considerations: as I have experienced with personal free email accounts, once data is "lost" if it is not only your hard drive it will never be found again

we have a floss lab @ goldsmiths and do not want to lose it - bespoke technical services are the best way to keep things open - the new mail system has always been trouble

A future we should prevent rather than regret
