Started by Weston Resident 8 years, 6 months ago

Sign this petition if you live in Weston and bought a Compo pass last year, but WILL NOT buy one this year.

Prices went from $250 to $375 for Weston residents, and from $40 to $50 for Westport residents. Westport expects Weston to cover ~40% of the upgrade costs to the beach, when we represent LESS than 7% of the people who pay to use the beach.

From Charlie Haberstroh, the head of Westport Parks and Rec:

"This is addressed to Westonites:
Your emblems still cost a lot less than emblems at Compo for other out of Towners. The number of emblems available to Westonites were not limited as were the dailies or out of town emblems. Westporters are covering roughly 1/2 the additional costs and out of towners 1/2.

We understand that the increases are high in percentage terms. We hope you continue to use our fine facilities in Parks and rec, but it’s a free world. This overcrowding issue is one that affected all shoreline communities in SW Connecticut, not just Westport. I would be surprised if other affected communities take similar actions."

The rapid growth of this petition illustrates a clear consensus regarding the unreasonable pricing structure for our community. This momentum confirms that our residents are unwilling to accept these costs without a formal challenge.

After moving here last fall we purchased our very first Compo Beach pass and after less than 3 Times going we knew we would not purchase another pass. The beach was dirty, staff was no where to be found, bathrooms and showers were not in working condition and gross. With the extreme rate increase you will be lucky to have any Weston residents contribute to any future renovations and improvements to the beach. Enjoy your dirty beach!

Westonites should not incur a disproportionate burden to subsidize needed improvements. Westport p and r should realize the large amount of funds weston as a town have contributed, yet those residents seem to rarely utilize the beach area. Overcrowding and “unsavory behavior” is not a product of Weston residents, and the punitive burden should not be placed on those who purchase the emblem. It will push out those Westonites who do not contribute to the problems there, yet support westport financially. This will surely hurt westport’s bottom line, shooting themselves in the foot.

Compo is one of the reasons we moved to the area and we have bought passes each of the 6 summers we will be here. This huge increase is just too high to be reasonable. Our pass fee and. $ spent at joeys will be put to better use somewhere else this summer sadly.

Such a foolish and short-sighted decision.

It is no longer economically viable to buy a beach pass (wasn’t even really last year). That with the negative comments towards westonite, which I found very dismaying has sealed my decision. The methodology for the decision is failed and short-sighted.

I’ve only lived in Weston for a year and a half. I bought a pass last summer but was honestly a little disappointed in the area. It was dirty, littered, and more than once I had to tell my two year old that the way the other kids were behaving was not good behavior. Not going to waste my money this year.

Keep this list handy, so after the summer is over and the beach was still crowded, westport will realize it wasn’t weston.

We were planning to buy two this year for both my car and my daughter’s but will now probably go to Fairfield and just Uber when we want to go to Compo!
