What England and Wales need is a good and expandable hub airport much closer to the geographic centre of demand and with good terrestrial transport links.
So amongst existing airports the choice should be between Stansted and Birmingham as the preferred locations for airport expansion.
Plans for a Thames Estuary location or an extra runway at Gatwick entirely miss the planning optimum of a centrally located hub airport.
At Stansted there is a small local population affected by noise, but it would require significant investment in high-speed rail access to bring the majority of the UK population within easy reach. This would require a high-speed line west and thence north, and a high-speed line to London, linking to the new Thameslink routes.
Birmingham is centrally located and there are already good terrestrial links, which HS2 will improve greatly, but there would be a need to flatten a large swathe of local housing to add runways 2 and 3.
Out of these two, Stansted seems the preferable location to expand.
But if you really want an optimum solution for a national hub airport, go for an entirely new location at or near the geographic centre of population which is in Leicestershire. There are good links here with the planned electrification of the Midland Main Line (though East-West high speed links would be required), and not too much population to be disturbed.

The hub is an out of date notion. Even if it wasn't it is time our Government considered what is good for the vast numbers of people who are affected by aircraft noise and other pollution. Commercial values are not the only ones.

More sensible to put third runway at Gatwick as less people would be affected. Also no need to close Heathrow as there could be fast rail link between the two.

During 36 Years i have seen the growth, expansion and saturation of Heathrow and surrounding communities. With the construction of terminal buildings, hotels, rail, road and motorway construction.Other options suggested must be given priority consideration as Heathrow is saturated !!

A 3rd runway at Heathrow will still be as bad for West London as it was the last time it was rejected.

Unfortunately, BAA is always going to want to expand Heathrow as it is the only way their Heathrow business can grow.

For a future Conservative government to give a green light to Heathrow expansion would be a broken promise, in support of a broken grwoth model. It would discredit politics itself.

Given the current levels of air & noise pollution generated by Heathrow how on earth can the proposal to create a third runway be justified?

I think the term "3rd runway" is a euphemism; it is to all intents and purposes a 2nd airport. If there has to be more noise, congestion and pollution, we already put up with our fair share.

In no other country is it allowed to have so many flights over such a densely populated area and one of the best cities in the world!
