Caroline Lucas MP proclaimed that 15% of the population account for 70% of flights in the U.K. (according to analysis of a 2014 government survey), so everyone must pay for the holidays taken by the better off. There is clearly a part for the individual to play here in recognising their own privilege and the impact their decisions have on others, but for the government to be complicit in this by facilitating more opportunities for flying, it is not showing ethical leadership for the long-term wellbeing of the population. The courts are currently considering accusations that the decision to expand Heathrow failed to take proper account of its impact on climate change. The Chancellor’s announcement on encouraging voluntary carbon offsets seems a desperate attempt to suggest the government’s on top of the issue. With aviation emissions set to carry on growing, this proposal will hardly scratch the surface of this problem. The government’s own climate advisers have said it shouldn’t be relying on offsets to tackle emissions from flying and the UN’s “ Corsia ” scheme, which aims to ensure any rise in international aviation emissions above 2020 levels are offset elsewhere, has received criticism. For example: unless it is extended beyond 2035, Corsia will cover only 6% of projected CO2 emissions from all international aviation between 2015 and 2050, International Council on Clean Transport (ICCT) data indicates. To build another runway is criminal. Increased pollution, increased noise and disturbance. Not to mention the communities affected by the construction. Stop the madness!

It is ridiculous that a major city like London has anairport expanding so close to residential areas. Every other major international city has sited a new airport well away from built up areas. All kinds of pollution on top of existing ones will drive it to excess.

I have lived in Charlton all my life (50 years) and have never experienced the level of noise from low flying planes like I have in the last few months. The noise is constant and distressing. I am a nurse and work shifts and have been unable to sleep. The noise starts from 04:45 hours and is constant throughout the day and this is unacceptable. Earplugs, pillows on head nothing works. Surly these approaches can be randomised so to give relief for us that are suffering. Air pollution must be very high too. This needs to stop.

This is a misuse of parliamentary power, and undermines the public's confidence in the entire democratic process. I have decided that voting is now totally pointless, and a fairer representative system needs to be introduced

Surely any extra capacity can be absorbed into other Airports so spreading employment etc
