Although preliminary, I have been informed by the Township that they are in the planning stages of placing street lighting in the Highland Woods neighborhood in Fairview Township, Penn. This process started because there was a request put in to the Township by a homeowner for a streetlight.

Regardless of the reasons that the street lighting was desired, they protrude unnecessarily on the quality of life of surrounding homes, have proven negative effects on nocturnal animals that make their home in the neighborhood, not to mention the sleep patterns of people, and contribute greatly to general light pollution, which impacts enjoyment of the dark suburban and rural skies we are lucky to still have in Mountain Top.

Please read the following article by Eric Betz for Astronomy Magazine published in 2015 for additional information pertaining to the debate between dark skies and lighting and safety. He references a UCL study, also linked below, that found there was NO evidence of any association between reduced street lighting and the aggregate counts of night time traffic collisions or crime.

If you are interested in keeping our neighborhoods free of needless light pollution, please sign this petition. I will be presenting the signatures at a public meeting on January 2, 2018 @ 7:30 PM at the Fairview Township Municipal Building. Thank you.

no Street lights, people drive too fast now, putting in street lights will up the speed of the vehicles making it more dangerous. 25 years in Highland Woods

I first moved into this neighborhood in 1977 as a child. When it was time to find a home for my family as an adult I was thrilled to move back to my neighborhood., One of the reasons is because of the beaufitul development has kept its charm. I am highly opposed to adding street lights! Elizabeth Bruno

Everyone, thank you. Please consider coming to the public meeting on January 2, 2017 @ 7:30 PM at the Fairview Municipal Building to voice your desire for no lighting in the neighborhood. I will present this petition with signatures, but it's much more effective if I wasn't alone during the meeting. Thank you!

Street lighting has done nothing to curb crime in Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton. If you want lighting, purchase and install your own.

I've lived in that neighborhood for my entire life. In no way shape or form does it need street lights!
