I am absolutely furious that Silfab has been issued a permit to continue their work! How on earth did we go from a unanimous vote against this permit to them having one in hand the following Tuesday? Thousands of emails against this, hundreds of concerned citizens, including children, speaking out about the hazardous materials this plant plans to use, and yet they still get a permit? This is outrageous and will not stand!
The community is already rallying to stop Silfab. News outlets are on this and plan to run more stories about how York County is betraying its citizens. I get it—money talks in politics—but a united community is unstoppable! We demand an explanation for this blatant betrayal!
In case you’ve forgotten, here’s a reminder of what this company plans on using at this location:
Toluene: Classified as a DHEC Category 3 pollutant, the most dangerous category. Its chronic effects can result in death or permanent injury after very short exposure to small amounts. The plant plans to use 132 gallons per year of Toluene, with an undisclosed amount stored on-site.
Hydrogen Fluoride (HF): This highly poisonous gas is fatal when inhaled, swallowed, or even when it encounters the skin. Also a DHEC Category 3 pollutant. The proposed plant will have two 7,925-gallon tanks of HF, refilled weekly. The Fire Department mandates a ½ mile evacuation radius. Even if Silfab’s estimates are correct and HF is released at 88% of the concentration limit, the risk remains unacceptably high.
Silane: A highly flammable, toxic gas with a sharp pungent smell, stored on-site in a 22,983-gallon tank (with an unknown total use). It’s so explosive that it “may explode when exposed to air.”
The gravity of this situation cannot be overstated. In the event of an accident, the evacuation zone would cover the entire north section of Fort Mill, affecting countless lives. There are currently 9 schools within 3 miles, as the crow flies, which would be in a mandatory evacuation zone i

Placing this plant just 1300 feet from two schools with 2500 students, as well as nearby neighborhoods and businesses, poses significant health and safety risks to our community. They should be relocated to a heavy industrial zone where such activities are more appropriate. Our priority must be to protect our residents and environment from these dangers.
