My wife and I own rental properties in Breckenridge, and am very concerned about how the public perception of the the town is being further transformed from a family friendly community into paradise for pot smoking (and purchasing). I encourage the Town Council to not allow retail shops in the Main Street area, and limit them to less conspicuous locations on the outskirts of town. The club on Main Street is more than enough to remind us that it is available. If you go down this path then you might as well allow Burger King, McDonalds, and other fast food chains as your character is being forever altered anyways by your decision.

As a property owner, Rick Bunchman has every right to not rent to a retain marijuana establishment, as does any other property owner. This is how the MARKET addresses the issues and exactly what would happen here. There would likely be no more than one or two additional shops, if that, between the strict rules on location, signage and the limited number of landlords that would be willing to rent. But there Town Council and the voting population have expressed a majority opinion that it should be allowed, if someone can find a legal space and a landlord willing to rent to them. It is hard to destroy the character of the town - which has always been one that was funky, welcoming and embracing, if in reality you can't find a lease.

Medical marijuana has been on Main Street since 2009. That is 5 years of data available with no detrimental effect. The only people calling attention now to the issue of marijuana shops on Main Street are the fractured town council where the minority block cannot accept that they have lost vote after vote and the very loud minority, many of whom are not registered voters here, who are yelling the sky is falling. If you think Oktoberfest is OK because it is temporary, then how about the over 80 liquor licenses? Neither pot nor liquor establishments are going to harm the character of the town. Breckenridge has always welcomed all. That is what made Breckenridge such a fabulous place to live. The VOTERS of Breckenridge passed Amendment 64 by a 70/30 margin. If that bothers you, then instead of embracing those with a different viewpoint, those against this issue stereotype those they believe patronize a recreational marijuana establishment and assume they are family-destroying nare-do-wells. All kinds of people patronize recreational marijuana - to sterotype is prejudice. Finally, Brecenridge Cannabis Club existed quietly prior to this issue and hopefully will continue to do so after this is over. Do you think allowing recreational marijuana on Main Street will turn it into a green jungle? Do you not trust those that are brave enough to run for office and serve on the council to regulate the industry and its allowable presence on Main Street enough to keep as low key as it now? Stop the bullying. Stop the negative talk. Join in a positive way and respect the vote that has happened rather than threatening those council members whose vote you disagreed with and badgering them until you get your way. Childish, embarrassing behavior.

I think we should impeach Town Council members Mark Burke (Burke & Rileys), Elisabeth Lawrence (Summit Foundation), and Erin Gigliello (TV8 Summit TV). All 3 candidates willingly accepted campaign contributions of $500 each from the only Main St weed dealer. It certainly looks like that was money well spent by the Cannabis Club.

Alan Simons Just now Harvey Ferguson, you are the one with the Faulty Comparison fallacy. A comparison of the purchase and consumption of two legal drugs, like Mo has done, is the more logical comparison.
If one walks Main Street in the evenings, especially on the south side of town, one can see that that bars aren't necessarily contributing to a "family friendly" atmosphere. And that is OK. Neither should be banned from Main Street. The same can also be said for Sunday Afternoon at Oktoberfest.
Families can visit the family friendly places and those that aren't so interested in family centric atmosphere can visit the other places.

While I understand that some pot buyers/ users may be putting forth an image the town doesn't desire, those people have been coming /living here for decades. I feel it to be a gross generalization to claim pot on main st will change the brand. It seems to me the brand is one that promotes alcohol consumption in public, specifically ON main st with Oktoberfest, beer tastings that last for days, ullr parade where shots of schnapps are drunk off skis in an attempt at a record, etc etc . Can someone please explain how that brand is family friendly? I find it hypocritical in the extreme to want pot sales off main st. As pointed out, it is illegal to actually smoke it in public! Whereas guests and residents alike are encouraged to get drunk in public on main st.... And then presumably drive home. I do not understand... Pot is BY FAR safer than alcohol.

It is easy to show the flaw in Mo Hylands’ comment. As pointed out, it is illegal to actually smoke it (and strip) in public!... Gentlemen’s clubs are BY FAR safer than alcohol.
A comparison of conduct rarely leads to good policy decisions.
The other error in Ms. Hyland’s comment is permanency. The events described as promoting alcohol consumption (whether one approves or not) are time-limited. Retail stores on Main Street are not.
In the end, whether one considers it right or wrong, allowing marijuana retail stores on Main Street will change the image of the Town for many locals and visitors. It just doesn’t make any sense to jeopardize the family friendly imagine the town now enjoys.

Craig, I couldn't disagree with you more and I am in favor of the petition. To be concerned with your financial interest in the town is far from wanting what's best for its residents. It was your choice to buy your second home and pay taxes, no one is forcing you. Just because I vacationed in your town, I wouldn't feel that I should be able to help decide what's best for it for the week I was there. You have no say and it is very shortsighted to think that you should make decisions for others. You are only part of our community in terms of economics when you come on vacation. Those of us in favor of this petition need to stop giving those in favor of it ammo. Mr. Ferguson, your response is so absurd that any point you are trying to make flies out the window! This has nothing to do with a strip club, it's about the pot shop on main street that has been there for 5 years. We need to show all the negatives that have happened to the town and the image/brand because of it. I have been so disappointed in the letters to the editor in the Summit Daily because they have made our side look worse because the letters written have been so out of touch. You can't make ridiculous claims, like the "woodies" taking over and expect people to take us seriously. We must show people that beyond what the papers report, ie. increases in summer tourism, highiest number of skier visits, decrease in violent crimes, that there have been many negatives because of pot shops on main streets.

I am not in favor of anymore marijuana shops on main street. We are changing the character of this town in a bad way! I own retail spaces on main street and would never rent to a marijuana operator regardless of the high paying rent they might offer!

What I find interesting is how many of the signers and commenters actually live in Breckenridge.
Nearly 80% of the town's residents voted to have marijuana treated exactly like alcohol.
If you don't live here, you don't get a vote. If the idea of marijuana stores on Main Street is that repugnant to you, you don't need to visit.
