On Monday, May 16th, the Lake Zurich Village Board of Trustees may vote to approve an agreement with Chicagoland Paving for North Old Rand Road On-Street Parking Improvements.

As Residents of Lake Zurich, we oppose this project for the following reasons:

-Driver Safety: Old Rand Road curves and the elevation dips by Breezewald park, this causes a lack of visibility and makes it very dangerous for cars backing out from the proposed parking, and cars driving on Old Rand Road.

-Pedestrian and children safety: Similarly, due to the lack of visibility around the proposed parking spots, pedestrians, kids, pets, and bicyclists who are walking or riding to, from, and around the park and the playground would be at risk.

-Value of Nature: The value of our public parks is to have the green space for the community to enjoy nature. The plants and animals living in the park have an intrinsic value that we must protect. Healthy, mature trees will be removed to make space for these overpriced parking spots. Saplings are a poor substitute for old growth trees. Nature at the park also adds beauty to our downtown area, parking is just an eyesore and limits visibility of the lake from downtown. The view of the park and the lake while residents bike or drive down Old Rand Road is one of the prettiest sights in all of Lake Zurich.

-Private Profit over Community Benefit: Additional parking at Breezewald Park is motivated by the operation of Sunset Pavilion, effectively putting business profits over the ability of the community to enjoy publicly funded parks. The Sunset Pavilion already limits the area of the park accessible to the public, and this parking proposal will further limit the area the community can enjoy.

16 new parking spots aren't worth the dangers and the losses of the proposed construction. There is already safe parking in downtown LZ that families have used and can continue to use to access the park.

Please join us at the Board Meeting on Monday, May 16th at 7 pm, in the basement of Village Hall to add your opposition during the public comment section. Add your name to this petition

Thank you for your support,

Lake Zurich Residents Laura Bohorquez, Katie Herzog

I'm all for adding more parking around the downtown area, but the way these spots will be constructed you'll only be able to pull in going south on Old Rand. I believe most traffic comes in going North and from Main street. I believe people are going to start making U-turns to park in these spots or pulling into residents private driveways to turn around causing traffic issues along with public safety around the park.

This proposed parking lot will not enhance the park, but will take green space away from Lake Zurich residents. Once we relinquish our green spaces to commercial ventures, WE NEVER GET THEM BACK! The removal of the mature trees is a shortsighted move. The Sunset Pavilion would also benefit from a more pedestrian and bike friendly downtown area. Are there any solutions that incorporate people powered transportation? The private development around the lake already diminishes the surrounding the natural landscape of the lake. Please don’t divvy up our parkland in the same way. Our green spaces are irreplaceable!

Please consider using other spaces on Main Street to increase parking for Sunset and other shops. In general we don’t need to compromise safety, esthetic’s and land I order to make parking more convenient. People will still come if they have to park down the street or around the corner at a public lot.

Breezewald Park is one of the loveliest assets the Village of LZ has. Adding parking to that area does nothing to improve the park, and will add congestion to a quiet corner of the Village. Please explore parking options in another area, and/or encourage the use of bikes and walking. The last thing we need is to encourage more cars and congestion in this area.

Our daughter has enjoyed Breezewald park as a bicyclist for years and has been a regular safe place for to meet friends. We would hate to lose that just to have more parking.

People live in this neighborhood. People who live in this neighborhood have safety concerns. This is not just about people needing a place to park to go to a bar. Also, why are we taking away public park land to give to a private bar. If they need more parking to get more customers and make more money find another space for parking.
