My name is Karla Sayles. I am a member of the Ft. McDowell Yavapai Nation. I have 2 young children and I have made this petition being due to my status as a concerned native mother over my son's academic well-being. In early January, I was accused of harassment by entering onto the school grounds of McDowell Mountain Elementary School. In that time, I had informed the school beforehand,( as well as my attorney) that I could not reach my child during christmas time and had bought several hundreds of dollars worth of gifts and wanted to make sure that my son was able to get them in his possession. I had E-mailed his teacher for several months regarding his progress However, I was still met with adversity and wrongly accused of harassment. After a short call with principal Joanne Meehan she informed me that she would inform authorities that I had harassed her. In my defense I am drawing up this petition to get signatures from people. I would like to add that I was welcomed into my younger sons school that same day( H'Man Shawa) and was able to deliver his long awaited christmas gifts. If you know me you know that I love my sons very much and that I am not a threat to them. I only wished to deliver my son his gifts that I had gotten him before I came back to NY for school. I have struggled through custody matters for years and feel like this school is extremely biased against me. If you are a native mother that carried children inside of you and pushed them from your loins then I hope you will sign my petition because I have my child's best interest. And there is no court, no officer, no school official that can "PROVE" that I ever have been a threat to my son. This is detrimental to my character because I did no wrong in this situation and understand that security measures are tight since Sandy Hook but I am a caring loving Native American mother that will never back down when it comes to her children. I pray that "NO" native American parent will ever be met with adversity when the custody guidelines are clearly understood by school staff... It was preferential that I just "NOT" be at the school at all. I will not be denied the rights of seeing my son at his school. And as with any other loving mother, I WILL NOT LET THIS SITUATION GO UNSEEN. I know that there have to be more of you out there that care and understand. I do not have the best background and have made tons of mistakes through those mistakes , people have gotten their foothold in to sustain dictation over my children. I want to make a difference for native women like me that have gone through similar situations. No mother should have to "KEEP" having her past mistakes used against them. And especially right now In my life I have made significant changes that would seriously conflict with this schools accusations. However,I was able to stand outside of the school at bus exit lane and flag the bus down and carry my sons gifts on to him. It came at a price. But my question is why should there be a price? I gave birth to my son and will never let him go for as long as I live. So, if you have a heart or know any other parent that struggles with custodial issues and has been treated in the same manner, please sign my petition.
