With the growth of population and the diminishing of farmland due to urban sprawl, we need more than ever to protect the farming land in Western NSW. We need farming land more than we need National Parks. The Government has already purchased well over their quota of farms for National Parks in Far West NSW. This is not only greatly reducing our capacity to provide high quality food and fibre to Australia and the rest of the world, but it is also destroying communities with the loss of farmers, their families, and their workers, reducing school numbers and local facilities.
There is also the issue of National Parks not paying rates; they don't pay Council rates, or any of the many levies that all farmers have to pay, so it will drive up the cost of these fees for all farmers, and Council rates for all landholders.
On top of all of this, there is the issue of feral animals and weeds, and the greater risk of bushfires due to the land not being grazed or maintained.
I have heard the excuse that there are rare or endangered species that will be protected by converting these farms into National Parks, but the truth is that those species are still surviving because the farmers have been great stewards caring for the land.
Farmers in the Western Division of NSW are some of the most sustainable, regenerative farmers.
Farming also brings in money, not only to the local community, but to the government with taxes, rates, levies and GST; National Parkes will only cost the government (tax payers) money.
As a nation we are already in huge debt, why would the government want to pay many millions of dollars in purchasing more farms, then more millions to maintain them?
That money could be spent on things like increasing police numbers, fixing roads, more medical practitioners in regional and remote areas, etc, etc.
The government needs to realise that WITHOUT FARMS, THERE IS NO FUTURE!

I agree that purchases should be based on an absolute need to protect environments that would be in jeopardy if not made National Parks not just to spend an allocation of funds just because you can.
