The city of cortland has always been known for its community efforts and the desire to be great. After living here for 21 years I have grown attached to calling this place my home. As we all know during this pandemic, we have a lot of spare time on our hands and some have gotten around to make new hobbies. For me and others in the community, whether it be kids, teenagers, or adults, the exhilarating feeling of riding around the ramps in willow park has been a lifelong dream and now journey! The skate park is home of many people - skate boarders, scooter riders, inline skaters, and even kids who see the ramps as just slides. Skating has been therapeutic and willow park has been a place to escape reality. Though with all the good the park has done for me and many others, we all agree there is one BIG problem. Our craft we partake in is not the easiest and just like any other physical activity it comes with injuries. It seems the main source of all the cuts and scrapes I have personally witnessed and experienced myself are from the rough pavement inside Willow Parks skate park. With all of the risk at hand already, it only makes things worse. The smallest of falls causes blood shed due to how rough and edgy the pavement is. With my body at risk, my friends, and little kids of parents who watch their loved ones ride innocently around with nothing but a good time in mind, I feel we should look into making the change of resurfacing the skate park to have the same smooth paving that the tennis court, basketball court, and the newly paved pickleball court have. This change would be greatly appreciated and would result in a lot less pain for the skaters and concern from parents for their children. This change would make a HUGE impact and i hope this petition shows how many people take advantage of this space and would also agree on the dangers that are at hand.
