It has come to our attention that It has been decided to require our Student Athletes to wear masks during basketball games, and practices. It has also come to our attention that schools whom we have been scheduled to play and are not requiring masks are cancelling games with Baldwin. Consequently, we have learned that refusal to play against teams that do not require masks may exclude us from participation in WPIAL playoffs. We as the parents of both the boys and girls basketball players feel this is an unsafe and unnecessary precaution and may end up causing more harm than good for our children, and are asking you to reconsider and allow our children to play without masks. Or alternatively, remove the demand that other districts impose mandatory mask rules while playing against our teams.
We do not want to make this a “scientific” discussion as to the efficacy of wearing masks versus not wearing masks while involved in athletic events, but we are open to discussions about alternative methods of virus mitigation that do not keep our Children off the Basketball Court this winter and limit their opportunity to play.
This change in policy was unexpected and we feel at least deserves more discussion.

The school board is still hiding behind these ridiculous mandates while our kids lose their chance to compete. I am meeting with district officials now to demand they stop ruining this season for our athletes.

Mask are not good with all that running.. Breathing heavy only makes you suck the mask into your mouth and nose. Which I would say is a form of suffocation!
Due to the players constantly moving around, the probability of transmission on the court is very low. Data from college basketball play agrees with.
Understanding your reasons for mandating mask wearing during games, I, as a parent, can accept that. However, I do not agree with the decision to FORCE other schools to adapt your policy at THEIR home games or our boys cannot play them. If their policy is no masks, that does not mean we can't wear ours. Please DO NOT force our boys out of competition due to this reason. They can still be safe and protected following your policy, even if the school we are playing does not share that policy. This current decision is only hurting the boys and will prevent them from going any further in the season, and that is not right.
The boys already take extreme precautions in order to play. While I strongly prefer that they not wear masks when they play, I feel it’s only fair that we allow other schools the freedom of their choice without impacting whether we play the game or not. For this issue to possibly disqualify our boys from post season play is down right shameful!
Had a child say they couldn't tryout this season due to their heart condition. Doctors said it was too dangerous while wearing a mask. That child may never play HS basketball because of this decision.
I’m not opposed to our boys wearing masks. But if opposing teams will not comply so be it. I believe our org’s requirement of doing so is acceptable protection.
These children need to breath while being active!

If our players continue to wear their masks, we should not be losing games and jeopardizing playoffs that the players and coaches are working so hard to achieve!
