Our plastic consumption is causing numerous problems within our marine ecosystems. It is time to change our habits to preserve our earth. We would like the city of Salem to enact a plastic bag ordinance that would eliminate the use of single use plastic grocery bags. Please Show your support by leaving your signature. Please only sign if you are a Salem resident (we do not own the image below).

I have been compiling the accounts of local environmental impacts shared by many of you in the comments. These personal stories provide the necessary context when I discuss this ordinance with city officials. Please expect a summary of those ongoing conversations once the next council session concludes.

June 22, 2016

The momentum behind this initiative has grown significantly over the past few days. This widespread consensus demonstrates that our community is prepared to prioritize the health of our local marine ecosystems. I am currently preparing to present this collective request to the city council for a formal review.

Plenty of towns have banned plastic bags sucessfully. We can, too. Not only for our marine life, but also for our green spaces, where children should never have to play among shredded bags and other trash.

Although this won't put an end to the issue of plastic waste completely, we can make this small baby step to make a difference in the city of Salem.

Let's have a bag-making party to kick this off. I'll donate time and thread to make bags out of old t-shirts.

People fear change, but they also adapt quickly. We can adapt to this change, we can use re-usable bags and make an incredible positive impact on our environment.

Living in salem my whole life and seeing all the litter stuck in the bushes is just depressing. Bring on the reusable bags already!

I 100% support this. We need to get a grip and start protecting the ocean. I walk it every day and I'm disgusted with the pollution there on the beach. But let's start with the plastic bags at least. :)

It's by far time for an end to single use plastic bags!
