Privatization of schools, jails, prisons, elections, hospitals and who knows what else, puts services and public institutions under the control of individuals who will use them to take more and more services away from the public in order to put more and more money in the hands of the 1%.

Don't sell our hospital! That would lead to increased costs and poorer service. New Hanover County deserves better. Keep our money and our control local. Profits for health care, not for stockholders!

This was tried before a few years ago and the commissioners voted it down- they should do so again. Whose idea was this anyway?

The only gain to be made will be for Lifepoint. NHRMC will suffer. I speak from experience, having watched what happens following “takeovers” in 2 prior health care facilities that I have worked prior to and following takeovers.

Sale of the hospital does not alter the challenges faced by NHRMC. In fact, it will make them more difficult since the buyer will take advantage of the strong financial position of NHRMC and take money out of this community to benefit other areas.

This deal would raise the cost of healthcare in our area, lead to reduced services and is irresponsible. The commission must do its due diligence and stand up an independent body to review this proposal.

I saw your request for ideas in today's newspaper. (I hesitate to identify it as a newspaper - but here goes). I am a retired person from West Virignia, but I have been in and out of here since 1946. My parents bought what is now Masonboro Harboutr in 1952 and it served as our home over the years until it sold in 1991. I came here to live permanently in 2003 and as a lawyere consider myself qute informed on the ability of the local leaders to do the unnecessary. With that in mind and as one who has occasion to use the hospital's services since moving here permanently in 2003 in more than one occassion, I have a vested interest in the containing good care the facility and it's doctors offer. So here goes..
If we are going to continue about running out of money there are off of the top of my head two quick and dirty solutions that would require work rather than whining.
a. First of all get the state out of the liquor business, breaking up that little play pen between the preachers and the politicians. The physical value of the gold plated ABC stores would amount to a considerable amount of money that could be turned into a sinking fund to forestall any future financial embarrassment to the existence of NHRMC. The overal ABC liquidation of the New Hanover and Pender County and even Brunswick County would be considerable. All of these counties enjoy immense benefits from the existing facility. This would require thinking out of the box - but it is about time this monopoly was broken up. As a liberal democrat I can find nothing wrong with this little exerise in capitalism.
b. With the continuing discussion over medicaid expansion there would be a great deal of revenue headed toward NHRMC which would on its surface go a long, long way toward neutralizing the supposed $200 million they eat every year. That number seems a little high to me - but given the pricing regimen followed by the medical community it could be a lot less in real terms. By th

Through my own experience with a large corporation, once you give up control you lose control (and cannot get it back). I suggest you read "Five Days at Memorial" by Sheri Fink. True story about a large hospital in New Orleans that suffered during Hurricane Katrina. The hospital had been sold to a large medical corporation out of Dallas, TX. It suffered from many things because of the crisis including a lack of empathy and shortage of supplies by the Dallas corporation. Who were held criminally responsible? The hospital employees. Don't be blinded by the dollar signs.
