We the undersigned, members of NYU Graduate Student Organizing Committee (GSOC) Local 2110 of UAW, are voicing our concern over the scheduling of the upcoming May 24-25 elections of GSOC Unit Chair and Local 2110 Executive Officers.

Holding elections after the end of the semester is a practice that goes against any democratic principles for a union that seeks to represent our interest as graduate workers. The summer break is a time when graduate students are often away from campus to conduct research and as such we will not be able to vote or participate in the election. This schedule in effect ensures minimum participation by our rank-and-file membership.

We sign this petition in order to bring our concern to our elected Local representatives to make sure that they safeguards this very basic aspect of our membership in the Union. There is no reason to hold elections during times when the majority of our members will not be able to vote. This is a bad precedent that needs to be avoided.
