To play devil's advocate I would say the reductionist approach isn't out of date at all, in fact it's seem as mainstream and even advancing in some quarters because of the emphasis on "brain science".

The DSM is a storybook (which doesn't mean it doesn't have limited usefulness) but being an individual doesn't preclude having a biomedical disease...

The DSM and the drugs for those disorders killed my son. Amen to a long needed course change to reject the selling of brokeness to the general populace.

I've seen firsthand the harm DSM categories can do. It is all too easy to "qualify" as mentally ill, with potentially devastating consequences.
