• In New York, 16 and 17 year olds are not legally allowed to buy cigarettes but if they become involved with the criminal system they are tried and sentenced as adults.
• On April 10 of this year, Governor Andrew Cuomo passed the Raise the Age legislation that would move 16 and 17 year olds to youth facilities and Family Court.
• Moreover, this Raise the Age legislation will ensure that no other 16 or 17-year-old would be tried as an adult.
