As educators and community members of New Mexico, we are gravely concerned about the funding and future of education in the state. Without adequate funding for equity and appropriate safety protocols that are scientifically based and well-developed, it is impossible to ensure the community’s well-being as we return to school in the fall. In the past two months, it has become clear that teachers are essential workers, and we want nothing more than to be in the classroom with our students. However, this must be done safely and ethically. We stand in solidarity as a community around these four principles:
- We demand a safe return to the classroom, based on scientific standards.
- Many schools do not have the infrastructure to follow the CDC recommendations. School facilities do not allow for safe social distancing practices.
- We demand that online learning must be temporary.
- As soon as it is safe to return to schools, we insist that all students receive a face-to-face educational experience that is equitable and meaningful.
- We demand that school funding be a budget priority.
- Simply returning to the inadequate funding levels of 2008 is unacceptable. Our students deserve a budget that ensures equitable experiences in the classroom. Money for safety materials must be separately allocated.
- The state has close to $20 billion in two permanent funds. A portion of these funds should be made available to finance safe schools.
- We demand that teachers, representing each district in the state, are included on the PED School Reentry Task Force.
- As classroom teachers, we are the experts in the reality of schools. Currently, not a single member of this task force works in a school. *One teacher has been added to the task force.
We must have a science-based, fully funded return to the classroom. If not, this highly contagious virus will undoubtedly spread rapidly through the school buildings and greater community of New Mexico with deadly results. Together, we will stand with our communities to fight for these demands until they are met.
Como educadores y miembros de la comunidad de Nuevo México, estamos muy preocupados por la financiación y el futuro de la educación en el estado. Es imposible garantizar el bienestar de la comunidad si volvemos a la escuela en el otoño sin una financiación adecuada para la equidad y protocolos de seguridad apropiados que tengan una base científica y estén bien desarrollados. En los últimos dos meses, ha quedado claro que los maestros son trabajadores esenciales, y no hay nada más que queremos como maestros que estar en el salon con nuestros estudiantes. I have been staring at these emails from the district all morning and honestly the silence from them is just as loud as their vague promises. It feels like they think if we just keep quiet long enough we might forget about the budget gaps but the stories coming in from you all about the actual conditions in our schools make it impossible to look away.

I logged on this morning and just stared at the screen because I honestly did not think this would gain this much steam. It feels like the urgency of our schools is finally clicking for people outside of our immediate circles and that momentum is a wild thing to watch unfold.

I am writing as a professor at UNM. I'm appalled at how APS has failed to fund safe, healthy schools and failed to invest in the best educational practices for our students right here at home - whether online during this pandemic or face-to-face for years before now. I am siding with my colleagues in APS in calling on you to make responsible budget decisions immediately!
A lot of families don't have the necessary resources to be able to keep up with the online classes. Especially with New Mexico being a low income state. Many families can't even afford reliable internet or have working computers at home. Not having these resources can really affect and change the outcome of any students life.
I am signing as both a teacher and parent! We miss our schools, but they must be safe, and we must balance the precautions we must have in place with best practices for teaching children.
I am a family physician - please let our children go back to school - they are not always safe at home. Don’t defund school!
Now, more than ever, professional educators are essential workers. We cannot be replaced with online, pre-fabricated “learning” experiences. Our children and communities deserve better.

Now is not the time for cuts to education. More than ever we will see children falling behind academically, socially not to mention the great impact in mental health. Please support education fully. Thank you!
