Hello everyone, I want to thank you for speaking up on the importance of keeping the Chinese language program at the high school. I also want to make several points about the board's decision to reduce the class offerings next year. First, Chinese program enrollment has been declining in recent years, with '19-'20 enrollment of 159. For this school year ('19'-20), average class size outside of AP/honors classes was 23 students. For budgeting purposes, as student enrollment changes, the district adjusts class schedules yearly to keep class sizes in the appropriate ranges. Like the slight turns of the wheel while driving on the freeway, slight budget adjustments keep us on target financially (i.e., balanced budget, appropriate reserves); if you delay adjusting the wheel on the freeway, the consequences could be serious. If you delay a needed budget adjustment, the future budgetary pain only increases. Second, looking ahead, the Chinese program will be right in line with other language programs. For next year ('20-'21), we have 155 students enrolled for Chinese classes, down 4 from this year, with projected class size of 31 students per class. While we eliminated one period of Chinese, we also eliminated Spanish periods. In comparison, our '20-'21 Spanish enrollment will be 680 students with an average class size of 34. Third, we are not cutting any courses offered in Chinese. We will continue to offer a full range of Chinese language courses, from beginner and honors to advanced (AP). Fourth, on a person note, I completely believe in the important of Chinese Mandarin for our students future. For that reason, I initiated and led the China trip last year as a cooperative venture between the SPHS and the South Pasadena Chinese American Club. We need to keep the Mandarin language option as a vital part of the curriculum. China is a country that we will be conducting significant business and a major player in the global economy. Knowing the Mandarin language will be an advantage to students who learn it.

Please don't shorten the Chinese program!!! it's just as important as any other class and it's very valuable. Especially now, Chinese is becoming a common spoken language and is being used in the business field a lot. It's a valuable skill to have. I've personally learned SO much in Ms. Chengs' class and it saddening to hear that a lot of kids wont be able to experience the same. Nonetheless, please reconsider in what you are doing!!!

This is just to keep a teacher teaching 2 classes. not to kick out the Chinese program.
